چکیده

Many studies have focused on the use of BiVO4 as a photocatalyst, but few have investigated the production of free radicals during the photocatalytic process. Following synthesis of flowerlike BiVO4 and characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) Scanning electron microscopy (EDX), UV-Vis and XPS, we successfully prepared BiVO4. Then we used electron spin resonance (ESR) to determine the production and degradation of individual active free radicals, including the superoxide radical (·O−2 ) and the hydroxyl radical (·OH). In the first experiment, we used ESR to detect the signals of free radicals (·O−2 and ·OH) under varying oxygen conditions. The results shown that in addition to production by ·O−2 , ·OH could also be produced by oxidation of h + to OH. In the next experiment, we detected ·OH under varying pH to identify the result of the first experiment, and found that signal intensities increased with increasing pH, indicating the mechanism for ·OH production. Finally, we conducted a trapping experiment to examine free radical degradation mechanisms. We identified ·OH and h as the main active free radicals and showed the complete production about ·OH. These results improve current knowledge of free radical production mechanisms, which can be used to enhance the photocatalytic performance of BiVO4.

Spectroscopic investigation of the mechanism of photocatalysis.

Reaction mechanisms of various kinds of photocatalysts have been reviewed based on the recent reports, in which various spectroscopic techniques including luminol chemiluminescence photometry, fluorescence probe method, electron spin resonance (ESR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were applied. The reaction mechanisms elucidated for bare and modified TiO2 were described indiv...

Synergy of metal and nonmetal dopants for visible-light photocatalysis: a case-study of Sn and N co-doped TiO2.

This paper mainly focuses on the synergistic effect of Sn and N dopants to enhance the photocatalytic performance of anatase TiO2 under visible light or simulated solar light irradiation. The Sn and N co-doped TiO2 (SNT-x) photocatalysts were successfully prepared by the facile sol-gel method and the post-nitridation route in the temperature range of 400-550 °C. All the as-prepared samples were...

Spin trapping evidence for the lack of significant hydroxyl radical production during the respiration burst of human phagocytes using a spin adduct resistant to superoxide-mediated destruction.

Failure to detect hydroxyl radical (.OH)-derived spin adducts of 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide in electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping experiments has been offered as evidence for the lack of the endogenous capacity of stimulated human phagocytes (neutrophils, monocytes, and monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM] to generate .OH. Recent reports that 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline N-oxide spin a...

Hydroxyl Radical Generation Depending on O2 or H2O by a Photocatalyzed Reaction in an Aqueous Suspension of Titanium Dioxide.

Photocatalytic production of the electron (e(-)) and positive hole (h(+)) in an aqueous suspension of TiO2 (anatase form) under illumination by near-UV light (295-390 nm) generated the superoxide (O2 (-)) and hydroxyl radical (•OH), which both proceeded linearly with reaction time, while H2O2 accumulated non-linearly. Under anaerobic conditions (introduced Ar gas), the yields of three active sp...

Characterization of free radical generation by xanthine oxidase. Evidence for hydroxyl radical generation.

Xanthine oxidase has been hypothesized to be an important source of biological free radical generation. The enzyme generates the superoxide radical, .O2- and has been widely applied as a .O2- generating system; however, the enzyme may also generate other forms of reduced oxygen. We have applied electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy using the spin trap 5,5'-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-ox...
